Nutrition
-Nutrients are found in food and have different functions in our bodies. The five main nutrients and their functions are as follows:
-Carbohydrates - provide energy
-Fats - provide energy, keep warm
-Proteins - for growth and repair
-Vitamins - protect bodies from diseases
-Minerals - help bodies to stay healthy

The Digestive System
-The digestive system helps to break down the food we eat into simpler substances for the body to absorb.
-The mouth, gullet, small intestines, large intestines, rectum and anus are part of the digestive system.
-The digestion of food begins in the mouth. The teeth grind the food into smaller particles. This makes it easier for the body to digest the food.
-The tongue mixes the food with saliva and rolls the food into balls to make it easier to swalllow.
-Saliva contains digestive juices which help to break down the food,
-Once the food is swallowed, it moves down the gullet.
-When a person swallows, a special muscle known as the epiglottis will close over the windpipe to prevent the food from entering the windpipe. A person will choke if food enters the stomach.
-After passing through the gullet, the food enters the stomach.
-The stomach is a strong muscle. It contains digestive juices which help to break down the protein and fats found in the food.
-After that, the food enters the small intestines.
-More digestive juices are added in the small intestines.Digestion is completed in the small intestines.
-Most of the digested food and nutrients are absorbed by th body in the small intestines.
-The food then passed into the large intestines. Water and mineral salts are absorbed by the body in the large intestines.
-The remaining undigested food moves into the rectum and is stored before it is expelled through the anus.
